If having more than 15 years of work experience as an engineer, then you can apply to become a CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) in Australia. Having this much experience means you must be a senior leader within the engineering profession. You would have also shown the 16 competencies that are needed to attain Chartership many times in your professional career.

Taking this fact into account, Engineers Australia has made it much easier for senior engineering professionals like you to apply for Chartered status via an interview. This pathway cuts out the industry review and formal assessment steps, acknowledging your years of engineering experience with a minimal time commitment.

Eligibility criteria you need to fulfill to become a CPEng:

To apply, you need to satisfy the following eligibility criteria:

  • A minimum of 15 years of post-graduate experience.
  • Have held major responsibility across your career including leading projects and teams.
  • Engineers Australia membership at Member level or above.

How to apply for Chartership:

Follow the below-given instructions:

  1. Pre-approval:

Prepare an extended resume detailing major projects you have been responsible for and your major attainments. It should include the positions you have held, situations, issues and opportunities you have faced, and the expert skills or knowledge you used to attain a positive result. The purpose of this is to make sure that the assessors can see how you have fulfilled the 16 competencies related to your occupational category.

In your resume, include the names, positions, companies, and contact details of two referees. One of them should be able to verify your resume and qualifications. After that, email your resume and the details of the two referees to Engineers Australia requesting to apply for Chartered for 15+years’ experience.

  1. Self-assessment:

After that, Engineers Australia will mail you a self-assessment form to complete. Complete it and email it back to the authority.

If your pre-approval is confirmed, you will get another mail from Engineers Australia with a link allowing you to apply via the EA portal.

  1. Prepare and upload documentation:

Use the link you got in the mail, and follow the prompts in the portal to upload:

  • The resume you mailed to EA including the details of your two referees
  • Proof of your continuing professional development (CPD). You need to have completed a minimum of 150 hours of CPD over the previous three years.
  • A color-scanned copy of your photo identification. A passport or driving license.

  1. Professional interview:

A professional interview with An EA assessor is the last step to becoming A CPEng Australia.

The authority will be in touch to fix a time for your professional interview with one of its assessors and you will get an invitation to the online Teams or Skype interview. It usually consumes a few weeks for an interview to be fixed.

This interview will run nearly for an hour and will include a wide discussion about your engineering career. The assessor will look for proof that you have fulfilled the 16 competencies that are related to your professional category. Besides that, EA will also use this interview to ascertain the depth and breadth of your engineering knowledge and experience in your area of practice.

It’s wise for you to prepare a short presentation introducing yourself and highlighting the major projects or activities showing your attainments. At most, six to eight sides are fine.
