I am GamesRadar+'s sports editor, obsessed with NFL, WWE, MLB -- and very occasionally things that don't have a three-letter acronym. Namely: Bill Bryson, Pitch Perfect, and also the Streets Of Rage series. I've got two children who aren't really old enough to perform Madden yet. Soon, thoug...
NBA 2K21 is officially out now, but I just got my full review copy yesterday morning, so this review in progress will trickle over into next week (following the Labor Day weekend). However, I was able to devote a good number of hours yesterday, and at that time NBA 2K21 has made it clear that it's claimed the franchise's record of leading on-court gameplay. The majority of the updates are comparatively small, such as loose rebounds looking and feeling a lot more realistic, however they also help add to an already solid foundation. The best part of NBA 2K21 so much is that the control tweaks, such as the new goal meter, make for an all-new learning curve. Unfortunately, updates to the surrounding game modes seem fairly barebones.
The aim-meter mechanic is actually hard to master, but has led to a really satisfying one-on-one isolation victories. It's nice having the ability to use the ideal stick exclusively as a sculpting tool until I am ready to pull back to get a shot. The capability to size-up, which can be tied to unique dribbling animations for lots of the best players in the league, and isolate is much far better than ever. I spent a few hours experimenting with various playstyles, like facilitating the pick-and-roll using Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. It is tremendously rewarding to utilize Doncic's dimensions and footwork to make space - something I could not replicate with other defenses on the team, like Seth Curry. While it's not completely new, NBA 2K21's ability to emulate players' playstyles is exceptional this year.
That said, there are a couple annoying gameplay issues I've come across, also. Fastbreaks seem slightly improved, but participant spacing is still noticeably off. For instance, even my best three-point shooters will track inside the three-point line on fast breaks when they would be better off locating space in the corner. Generally, it seems like NBA 2K21 hasn't fully adapted to the accent modern NBA basketball has put on the three-point line. Quick catch-and-shoots aren't as common as they should be, and final out remains far too easy on defense.
Likewise frustrating is that the CPU's capacity to create problems for Buy NBA 2K21 MT itself. In my brief time with NBA 2K21, I have seen two backcourt violations on wide-open inbounds passes. It served as a jarring reminder I was not, in actuality, experiencing a real game of NBA basketball.
