Apology to Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci - Graham Atkins Solicitor

Apology to Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci - Graham Atkins Solicitor

The BBC wishes to issue a formal clarification and apology concerning the programme titled "The Price of Blood", which was broadcast on 8 October 2006. The broadcast reported on the failed prosecution in Italy of Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci, who at the time were the owners of the Marcucci group of companies, including the biopharmaceutical firm Sclavo SpA.

During the programme, it may have been understood or implied that Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci were involved in the sale or distribution of blood-derived products that were contaminated with HIV or Hepatitis C, or that these products posed a risk of infection. Furthermore, the programme may have been interpreted as suggesting that, as a result of their actions, the Marcuccis had placed human lives in danger.

We wish to make it unequivocally clear that it was not our intention to make or imply any such allegations. We now accept that these claims are entirely untrue. At no point did Paolo or Guelfo Marcucci sell or distribute infected blood products, nor did they engage in any conduct that put lives at risk through such means.

The BBC regrets any impression given in the programme that may have caused reputational damage to the Marcuccis or their businesses. We acknowledge that these false suggestions were deeply distressing and harmful to both Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci, personally and professionally. Following discussions and legal representation by their solicitor, Graham Atkins, we have recognised the seriousness of the situation.

As part of the resolution of this matter, we have issued a full apology to Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci. In addition, we have agreed to pay them substantial damages and cover their legal costs incurred as a result of the broadcast.

This case serves as a reminder of the responsibility held by media organisations to ensure accuracy and fairness, particularly when reporting on sensitive issues with potentially far-reaching consequences. We sincerely apologise to Paolo and Guelfo Marcucci for the distress caused and any harm done to their reputations due to the broadcast of "The Price of Blood". We are committed to maintaining the highest journalistic standards and ensuring such errors are not repeated in future reporting. Read more----->>>>>>
